I loved Easter as a kid, and I still love it today, although for a different reason. But for a child this has to be right up there just behind Christmas and just ahead of Halloween as far as holidays go. I remember in 1st grade, I found the golden egg in my class and won this stuffed yellow Easter bunny. This is significant because I can't remember much of my childhood, but that moment, I've always remembered. The only bad thing about Easter is having to dress up. It's the only holiday that requires kids to wear little pastel suits and dresses. I know because I've seen the pictures. I was that child who was forced to wear the canary yellow suit and pants. Aside from the embarrassment of looking like a banana, Easter was great.
What really makes Easter great for a child is the Easter basket. My mom wouldn't buy the generic Easter baskets. She created her own baskets for each child, and I recommend you do the same. Here's three reasons why.
1. Candy Selection - You get to pick and choose what candy goes in the basket. This means you're no longer stuck with a bunch of peeps that nobody wants. My personal favorite, Cadbury Creme Eggs. Someone should start a petition to keep these on the shelves year round. And remember their famous commercials with the clucking bunny, those were great.
2. Toy Selection - For the same reason you want to pick your candy, you should pick the toys. My baskets always contained packs of basketball cards, because that's what I loved. I even remember one year my basket contained Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figures. Those generic baskets have the worst toys in them. Don't waste your money on stuff your child is just going to throw away.
3. It can Save you Money - In the beginning it may cost you more because you're having to buy the baskets. But if you buy strong durable baskets you can use them year after year. Also since you're picking your own candy, you don't have to buy the Easter themed stuff which is overpriced. Maybe they love a certain type of candy bar, just buy some of those.
Even if it doesn't save you money, this is one place I encourage you to be less frugal. This is a special holiday, make it memorable. Wives make a basket for your husband. Husbands make a basket for your wife. If you don't have children, see if you can find a family who can't afford to buy for their kids, and buy for them. And let's remember the reason for giving. Christ gave his life for us, and was raised again 3 days later. I wish all of you, a very Happy Easter.
