I think we've finally decided to take a summer vacation. We've been debating whether it would be better to save the money to pay on bills, but I think we've both decided we need a break from our jobs. I've been working longer hours because my boss has been out of work for going on 6 weeks, and my wife stays stressed out at her job regardless of the hours. I'm afraid if we don't get a break, we may break down. This will also get us refreshed and ready to go when we move into our new church building in late May or early June.
Now, to keep things in perspective, because this is a money saving site, we are not going overboard on our vacation. We passed on going on a cruise with some relatives, and we had to scrap the idea of going to Disney World despite my persistence in finding the best deal. I just couldn't make Disney World work for under $1,500. I really, really wanted to be able to fly to my destination, but because of the cost of the flight plus a rental car it wasn't worth it. So that means we'll be taking a road trip in our own car. If everything goes as planned we'll be driving to Myrtle Beach, SC, spend a few nights there. Then to Savannah, GA to spend a couple nights there, before heading back home.
To aid in planning our trip I'll be using Travelzoo and Tripadvisor. Travelzoo is the best website for finding deals on travel that I've come across. It easily lets you search for deals to any destination. When searching for Myrtle Beach, it gives me two different resorts offering stays for $59 and $69 a night during the month of May. I also recommend signing up for their weekly newsletter in which they provide you with the top 20 travel deals of the week. Tripadvisor is another great resource. They provide information on where to stay, where to eat, what to do, and any thing else you can think of. They also have forums where you can go and hear from others who've been there and done that before.
I haven't been to Myrtle Beach in 15 years, and this is my first time to visit Savannah. I would really love to hear some of your suggestions on things to do, places to stay, etc. I'd also love to hear about any vacation plans you're making.

I have found travelzoo to be a great resource as well. I always make sure to check three specific sites for good flight deals though; Spirit air, NWA, and AirTran. I almost always find the best deals through one of those sites.
I've heard of Tripadvisor, but not Travelzoo. Will check that out.
We are thinking of renting an RV to be able to drive to Destin, FL. Don't know that I want to be cooped up in an airplane with the crud going around. We figure the RV will help us save on hotel and give the kids a little freedom in the long travel.
If you are a golfer, you have 100s of courses to choose from in Myrtle Beach. Last fall, I saved up for a golf weekend with some church friends.
I am told there are great outlets down there as well. Of course, you are probably looking for free.... or inexpensive things to do.
Angie: Renting an RV sounds like a great idea to save money. When planning my trip hotel stays are going to be the biggest expense by far.
Bob: I enjoy playing golf, but I'm horrible at it. Plus, I'll be with the wife and she just wants to lay on the beach, which is fine by me. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
