Despite talks of an economic turnaround, the economy is still sputtering along. Rising gas prices are not helping matters, and thousands of people are still losing their jobs every day. Food prices are going up, and home values are going down. Finding ways to save money is more important than ever. Here are just a few easy fixes that could save you up to $50 a week.
1. Avoid the ATM - ATM transactions on average, charge about $3 in fees. Try to only use ATM's that belong to your bank, or use the cash back option at retailers like Walmart. I used another branch of my local bank just a few days ago and it even charged me a fee. This is one of the many reasons I'm switching banks. Weekly Savings $3 to $10.
2. Get Rid of Your Home Phone - Get with the times. Everyone has a cell phone now, and the coverage area is vast and wide. A landline will cost you at least $25 a month. Weekly Savings $8 to $15.
3. Buy Generic - Buy generic pharmaceuticals and groceries to save up to 50% on many items. It's hard to tell the difference on many of the items, and you can still keep those name brands you can't do without. Weekly Savings at least $25.
4. Get a Library Card - Does anyone still go to the library? If you do, you know that the library provides books, dvd's, and internet access for free. You can't beat that. It beats paying Blockbuster or Netflix. If you want to save money without visiting the library check out Redbox for $1 movie rentals. Weekly Savings $5.
5. Drop the Gym Membership - A while back a lot of people at my church got on this gym membership kick. Everyone was joining this local gym that had opened up, and my wife was really wanting us to join also. I said no, and a month later everyone had dropped their gym membership. Don't get caught up in financial mistakes, just because everyone else is doing it. Weekly Savings at least $15.
