I don't know what to do. My fiance's ex wife was terrible with money and nearly drove them to bankruptcy. When we got engaged, his mother told him to keep our checking accounts separate (I can only assume because of what happened with his former wife). I am a firm believer in "the two become one" in every way, including finances and want us to merge our accounts into one. He seems extremely reluctant to do this, but says he's not closed to the idea either. I want to encourage him to go with me on this, but don't want it to become a point of contention. Can anyone offer any advice?

Having a baby for the first time does create some uncertainty when it comes to expenses. I've recently been there as we have two young children. Your priorties do change, but it is for the better. Beyond some of the initial expenses with having a child, it's really a matter of planning your spending plan each month for these additional expenses. There's certainly going to be more expenses associated with diapers, etc. But you'll get it figured out after a few months. Sure there are some sacrifices, but it's worth it.

this is a very controversial question more because it assumes there is one right answer (and i believe there is not). it depends on the family's culture/values/tradition. typically, however it was done in the past (who pays for what) will be how it happens in the next generation. the issue can certainly come up when two parents came from different backgrounds as it did for me and my wife. my parents thankfully paid for both my undergrad (private school) and grad school education. i would call them upper middle-class but extraordinary savers (very frugal) and thus had the ability to do so. i don't think i will ever be able to repay them for what they did (giving me a debt-free beginning). my wife had to get grants and small loans in addition to some family help. i would agree that having the child pay for some of the expense would nurture responsibility and help them appreciate their education more. but with the cost of college now, it can be a huge burden on them to have to pay for all of it.

1) I am not convinced that Compact Fluorescent bulbs are worthy of all the praise that they receive. I don't personally find the light they emit very appealing; most of them have a very high-pitched sound that really annoys me; my experience with them is that they don't last as long as advertised; lastly they contain mercury which requires more care when disposing than ordinary incandescent bulbs.
2) The insurance comment is a common sales pitch for whole life insurance, but our actual needs for life insurance are different during different phases of our life. "Buying early" to get the best deal may not be the right insurance for your entire lifetime and ultimately, not be the best for you.

i think it has to do with knowing yourself. since you have never had a credit card, this may seem foreign to you, but if you consider the credit card "just another debit card" with the added responsibility of paying off the credit card before interest kicks in, it is possible to be responsible with a credit card, reap the rewards, and not worry about the interest rate. i don't even know what the interest rate on my CCs are because i have never paid a dime of interest in the 10+ years i have had a card. the CC company will make money off the merchant fees but not off me. i keep track of my CC balance daily to weekly and pay it off just as often so my checking account never looks inflated. it is possible, but as you mentioned takes discipline.
